Brief History of the Program
The BS Mathematics and Science Teaching program was approved by the Board of Regents in January 2003 upon recommendation of President Francisco Nemenzo, Jr. It was initially offered in the first semester 2003-2004. The program was proposed by the College of Arts and Sciences in cooperation with the College of Public Affairs. Apart from that, the program is jointly implemented by the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS), Institute of Chemistry (IC), Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics (IMSP).
Vision & Mission
The graduates of the BS Mathematics and Science Teaching program shall:
- be competent teachers (in terms of content and teaching skills) of high school mathematics and science;
- be able to address classroom issues and problems through the use of effective pedagogy and didactics;
- participate in activities addressing educational reforms in view of uplifting the state of education of the Philippines;
- be imbued with educational values relevant to the practice of the profession;
- be committed to serve the Filipino youth as role models, maintaining high professional standards in various school settings throughout the country especially the rural areas;
- engage in lifelong learning activities to enable them to become useful citizens of the country and the world.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, students should be able to:
- articulate the latest developments in their specific field of practice;
- effectively communicate orally and in writing using both English and Filipino languages;
- work effectively and independently in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams;
- demonstrate professional, social, and ethical responsibility, especially in practicing intellectual property rights and sustainable development;
- preserve and promote “Filipino historical and cultural heritage”(based on RA 7722)
- demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge and understanding in the core areas of physical and natural sciences;
- apply critical and problem solving skills using the scientific method;
- interpret relevant scientific data and make judgments that include reflection on relevant scientific and ethical issues;
- carry out basic mathematical and statistical computations and use appropriate technologies in the analysis of data;
- communicate information, ideas problems and solutions, both, orally and in writing, to other scientists, decision makers and the public;
- relate science and mathematics to the other disciplines;
- design and perform safe and responsible techniques and procedures in laboratory or field practices;
- critically evaluate input from others;
- appreciate the limitations and implications of science in everyday life;
- carry out basic mathematical and statistical computations and use appropriate technologies in the analysis of data;
- commit to the integrity of data;
- demonstrate thorough knowledge and understanding of the concepts and theories of Mathematics and Science;
- demonstrate proficiency in mathematical and scientific skills;
- manifest skill in teaching Mathematics and Science;
- carry out action researches pertaining to the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science;
- show appreciation of the values derived from learning and teaching Mathematics and Science;
- lead with honor and excellence in public service and in fields of practice.
